22. klonoa: door to phantomile

the only part of klonoa's life that was real - his memories prior to his final day having been revealed to be a lie created so he could serve his purpose - does not seem to have been very enjoyable. what starts with innocent curiosity in a bright and inviting world descends quickly, perhaps more quickly than klonoa himself would care to admit, into complete chaos. there is little in phantomile that feels inviting at all, and as the sun sets on klonoa's single day of adventure, the world becomes more frightening than anything else. that he experiences the death of a loved one even before this nosedive into surreal terror is certainly worthy of mention. klonoa plunges into this nightmare believing that at the end of this all, he will be allowed to live in the peace he has worked to create, only to find out that he is not welcome here and was never welcome here. he couldn't have predicted this, but there's delusion in his reaction. he's sad, as though he lost something, but what exactly? nothing was taken from him. none of it was real. at the end of his very short time in phantomile, as he's being pulled into that...sky portal thing, he thrashes against his fate. what is his plan? what alternative is he fighting for in this moment? he acts as though, if he can just hold onto this world, he can get back to...what, exactly? discounting the lie he had once believed, his life in phantomile has been agonizing. what does he expect to happen now?
