19. metal gear solid delta: snake eater
unfortunately a mechanically superior experience to the original game, i'm still comfortable calling this remake, like most remakes, stupid and cringe, due to a handful of troublesome changes it makes.
for starters, the new colors are different. i don't care at all to analyze whether or not they're "better." "better" is a stupid word for people who don't respect the medium of video games. they're different, and they shouldn't be, and i am insulted by anyone who posits the game's optional slap-dash "legacy" filter as a solution.
next would be the inability to switch the camera. the whole "legacy mode" shit is dumb. let me switch the camera. the version of mgs3 most people played allowed them to switch between the snake eater and subsistence camera. let me switch the camera!
finally, the new title screen is dumb and worse, as is the new recording of the titular song, and i shouldn't have to play on legacy mode to see and hear the original versions.
what did i like about mgs delta, you may be wondering? i like being able to swap the camo faster. that's a good feature. i also like that the game is still mostly metal gear solid 3. that's a really good game. finally, i admire - as much as i could ever admire anything konami does - the inclusion of the ape escape mode. i don't know what was involved in acquiring the rights for that, but, cool that they did it.
i didn't buy delta, by the way. and i wouldn't buy delta.
konami remaking mgs3 - as opposed to, you know, 1 or 2 - is an obviously cynical move to rake in as much nostalgia-money as possible for a franchise they mutilated now that they've decided the pachinko bullshit they mutilated that franchise for will not sustain a business. i am hardly as insulted over delta as i am over the entirely anti-art silent hill 2 remake, but it's worth remembering that konami only did what they did all those years ago because some dumbass fucking mobile game started making money. it's worth noting of course that in the case of both metal gear and silent hill, konami is returning to these franchises after ripping them away from hideo kojima, the truest artist for my money in the whole of AAA games development, as he was in the middle of working on titles in both franchises that had already set the internet ablaze in anticipation. and make no mistake, silent hills wasn't the only game kojima game that konami didn't let come out. the mgsv that we got is not, could not be, the game that we were met to get. i mourn these titles far more than i could ever love metal gear solid delta.
oh and also ddr world fucking blows. a3 was better. i hate you, konami.
